Hi! While searching “Metamora, Ohio” on google.com, I came across your website. I read the blog about spending time in your grandma’s printshop, and I knew immediately that you were talking about Vera Henderson. I knew Vera and grew up across the street from her. I, too, remember her at the METAMORA RECORD! My grandmother, Emma Doyle, was your grandma’s housekeeper! Do you happen to remember any of the Doyle kids on East Main?! I believe that my sister was your brother’s age. I can’t remember his first name, but your last was McCluggage, right?! I must have been in Europe this past July when your dad died, or I might have read his obit in THE BLADE. Anyhow, I enjoyed reading about Vera. She was quite a lady and businesswoman! I can’t remember your mom’s first name, but I do remember your Aunt Joyce. She had children that went to school with my youngest sister, Dawn. Anyhow, you have my sympathy on the loss of your parents. My mom, Alice Doyle, is still alive in Metamora, and will turn 85 years old in November. My husband, Norman, and I winter in Venice, Florida. Do you live in California? Would love to hear from you!

    Patricia

Patricia, my Aunt Joyce and I are so excited to have discovered your comment here, that I can barely concentrate on my work today! I would love to exchange email with you. You can contact me here:

Aunt Joyce remembers your family well, of course. My maiden name was indeed McCluggage, and I’m certain that my brother will remember you.

Thanks so much for this wonderful connection!

    Hi Vera and Joyce!
Sorry I only recently found your reply to my blog! Glad to hear that Joyce is alive, and well, I presume! I have a sister, Gloria, that lives near L.A. (Granada Hills, CA to be exact!

My dad has been gone for 17 years already. He was only 73 when he died.

I am in Venice, Florida, for the winter. Please write!

    Hi Joyce and Vera,

Glad to hear from you! Sorry I just found time to get on this website again.’

I am in Florida for the winter (Venice). I have a sister, Gloria, in the LA area of California (Granada Hills). Her last name is Gedeon.

Sharon is in New Jersey. She and her husband have race horses (trotters).

Gary is in DeLeon Springs, FL., and Dawn is in Michigan near Ann Arbor.

Mom is coming to spend a few weeks with us here in Florida to get away from the cold Metamora weather.

    Where are Joyce’s children?

Again, great to hear from you

    Hi Tricia,

I just tried mailing a letter to you, care of your mother in Metamora. Perhaps it will make its way to you eventually.

Aunt Joyce is well. I’m going down to L.A. to visit her next month. Her daughters Claire and Christine live in northern California. I see them from time to time. My two daughters grew up with Claire’s two daughters — they are nearly the same age. Christine has three grown sons. Joyce’s youngest daughter, Colleen, lives in Maine. She and her husband have two daughters, and Colleen is already a grandmother!

I will email Aunt Joyce and tell her to read your comments here.

I hope the winter in Florida goes well — it sounds great!

My uncle Harold Buck ran the printing press in Metamora from the early 40’s. He was married to Hellen Buck with two sons Eddie and Kenny. I know Harold Passed away….was wondering if you knew Helen? Is she still alive?

  7. vera Says:

Dave, one of my earliest memories was of standing on tip-toe in my grandmother’s print shop, watching Harold set type on the linotype machine. I can still see in my mind’s eye the trays of letters and the bucket of lead for creating the spacers (leading) to go between the lines of type.

My brother and sister also remember Harold. We didn’t know his family, but my aunt did, and she has asked if Hellen is still living.

Please feel free to email me at verahoriuchi@gmail.com. It’s unexpected and fun to re-establish contact with Metamora people!
